Fields of Mistria Skills & Essence: All Perk Tiers & Caldarus Guide
Essence is the permanent-power currency of Fields of Mistria. While Tesserae buy seeds and bag upgrades, essence buys permanent perks at the Caldarus shrines. Orbs drop whenever you perform actions tied to the skills, and the counter sits in the top-right HUD directly beneath your Tesserae balance. This page covers how essence works, where to spend it, and which perks to buy first.
9 Skill Trees 2 Shrines 5 Perk Tiers
How the Essence System Works
The essence tutorial arrives through story progression with Eiland and the Caldarus statue on your farm. A fallen tree blocks the shrine at first; clearing it triggers a dream sequence where Caldarus explains essence and the perk tiers. After that, press your interact key at the statue to open the perk browser.
Where essence drops (per skill action)
| Skill | What drops essence | Shrine |
|---|---|---|
| Farming | Tilling, planting, watering, harvesting. Multi-harvest berries give steady orbs across Summer and Fall. | Farm |
| Fishing | Successful catches and diving pickups. Wider catch-bar perks shorten cast cycles and raise orb/hour. | Farm |
| Archaeology | Completed digs at dig sites (needs a shovel from the General Store). | Farm |
| Cooking | Finished recipes — batch-cook meals before mine days. | Farm |
| Ranching | Petting, milking, shearing, and collecting henhouse products. | Farm |
| Woodcrafting | Finished bench timers — queue crafts overnight. | Farm |
| Blacksmithing | Finished anvil/smelting timers. | Farm |
| Mining | Breaking rocks and ore nodes. | Mines |
| Combat | Defeating monsters on each mine floor. | Mines |
Magic is not a perk tree — it is unlocked by clearing mine Tablet Seals (Water F20, Earth F40, Fire F60, Void F80, Dragon Forge F90). See Magic & Spells and the Mines guide.
Perk Tier Gates: Level 1 / 15 / 30 / 45 / 60
Each skill has multiple perk tiers. Tier one unlocks at skill level 1, tier two around 15, tier three near 30, tier four near 45, and tier five approaches the level 60 skill cap. Early tier-one perks cost roughly 10–20 essence; tier-four abilities can exceed 150. Purchases are instant and permanent for that save file — there is no respec.
| Skill | Tier 1 (Lv 1) | Tier 2 (Lv 15) | Tier 3 (Lv 30) | Tier 4 (Lv 45) | Tier 5 (Lv 60) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Farming | Stamina refund on till/water/harvest (Green Thumb) | Seed refund / extra harvest on multi-harvest crops | Wider harvest area; stamina savings scale up | Automation-adjacent yield bonuses | Top-tier farming efficiency |
| Fishing | Appealing Reeling (wider catch bar) | Treasure Hunter variants (chest spawns) | Legendary-season fishing perks — skip until the right seasons | School Crasher fishing schools | Endgame fishing efficiency |

Perk names in italics are confirmed from in-game data and the official wiki. Descriptive tier cells (e.g. "wider harvest area") summarize the effect family shown in-game; read each perk's full description before buying, since higher tiers sometimes upgrade earlier perks automatically (for example Lucky Haul → Lucky Haul II).
Leveling Each Skill Faster
| Skill | How to level it | Efficiency tip |
|---|---|---|
| Farming | Till, plant, water, harvest daily. | Plant multi-harvest berries for steady essence across Summer/Fall instead of replanting everything. |
| Fishing | Successful catches and diving pickups. | Buy Appealing Reeling early to shorten every cast; rotate to school perks late-game. |
| Mining | Break rocks and ore nodes; kill monsters each floor. | Use elevators every 5 floors for efficient ore/essence loops. |
| Combat | Defeat monsters on mine floors. | Eat buff meals before runs — going in unbuffed slows both combat and essence gains. |
| Woodcraft | Finish bench crafting timers. | Queue crafts overnight so timers progress while you sleep. |
| Blacksmith | Finish smelting/anvil timers. | Queue ingots overnight; pair with faster-craft perks. |
| Ranching | Pet, milk, shear, collect eggs daily. | Auto-pet and product-quality perks cut daily chore stamina once you own a barn/coop. |
| Cooking | Finish recipes. | Batch-cook on rainy days when field work is limited; prep buff food before mine days. |
| Archaeology | Complete digs. | Buy the General Store shovel (~500 Tesserae) first; upgrade dig stamina perks once bridge repairs open more sites. |
Recommended Perk Routes
Early survival route (first ~50 orbs)
- Farming — stamina refund on water/hoe (Green Thumb).
- Fishing — wider catch bar, after you own a rod.
- Farming — seed refund or extra harvest once berries are planted.
- Cooking — buff duration for mine prep.
- Archaeology — dig stamina, once the shovel is owned.
If you rush the mines, shift steps 4–5 toward blacksmithing and combat prep perks at the mine dragon statue instead.
Farming-income route (post-mines)
- Lock multi-harvest berry crops and take farming yield/seed-refund perks.
- Invest woodcrafting essence in automation statues so watering and feeding stop costing stamina.
- Use freed-up stamina for archaeology digs and fishing schools, which compound essence income.
- Keep a 20–30 essence reserve for greenhouse and automation craft goals.
Common Misconceptions
- "I can respec later." No — there is no respec. Read the full perk description before confirming; duplicate-looking perks often auto-upgrade (Lucky Haul → Lucky Haul II).
- "Fishing treasure perks early." Tier-three fishing perks look tempting before you can reach legendary-fish seasons. They are a mid-game trap.
- "Essence is per-skill." It is shared. Do not drain the pool on mine perks while farm automation stays locked.
- "Skip cooking." Entering mines without buff food slows combat essence gains. Batch-cook before runs.
- "Buy mining perks at the farm statue." Mining and combat are only sold at the dragon statue inside The Mines, after Town Rank Stone.
