Fields of Mistria Controls: Keyboard, Controller & Steam Deck
Fields of Mistria supports full rebinding on keyboard and gamepad and carries an official Steam Deck Verified badge. The one setting every new player should fix in the first session is Tool Use (Repeated), which ships unbound by default — without it you click hundreds of times per day just watering crops. This page lists the defaults, the controller layout, and the rebinds worth making before Spring ends.

Steam Deck: status and settings
Valve lists Fields of Mistria as Steam Deck Verified: text is readable on the Deck screen and the default controller mapping works out of the box. Two tweaks improve handheld sessions:
- Lower the in-game text size one notch if menu text clips at the Deck's native resolution.
- Rebind Tool Use (Repeated) to a back paddle (L4/R4) through Steam Input so your thumbs can stay on movement while you water and hoe.
- Cap the frame rate in the Steam Deck performance menu for long sessions — mine combat and particle effects drain battery faster than farming does.
Keyboard & mouse defaults
| Action | Default binding | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Move | W / A / S / D | Arrow keys also work. Hold Shift to sprint on the surface. |
| Aim / cursor | Mouse | Aims hoe, watering can, fishing cast and weapon swings. |
| Primary tool | Left mouse button | Single hoe/water/cast/strike. |
| Charged tool | Right mouse button | Charged pickaxe breaks and some sword attacks. |
| Repeated tool | unbound by default | Bind it immediately — see below. |
| Interact | E (verify in settings) | NPCs, doors, shrines, shipping bin, elevators. |
| Inventory | I or Tab | Opens your bag. |
| Map | M | Unlocks after early story. |
| Pause / settings | Esc | Where you rebind everything. |
| Throw held item | G | Confirm it is not a quest item first. |
| Hotbar / tool wheel | 1–0 or mouse wheel | Order tools to your daily routine. |
Inventory shortcuts (PC)
- Shift + click — move a whole stack between your bag and an open chest. Essential for offloading ore and wood.
- Ctrl + right-click — split a stack in half. Handy when packing exactly ten items for a request.
Controller mapping (Xbox / DualSense / Switch Pro)
On a gamepad the game reads Steam Input and uses a standard action-RPG face-button layout. Exact glyphs depend on your pad, but the roles are consistent:
| Cluster | Role |
|---|---|
| Left stick / D-pad | Movement and menu navigation. |
| Right stick | Tool reticle / aim. |
| Face buttons | Interact, confirm/cancel, tool use and dodge in combat. |
| Bumpers / triggers | Tool wheel cycling and charged tool use; L/R triggers swap between tools. |
| Back paddles (Deck / Elite / Strike) | Free bind slot — put Repeated Tool here. |
Recommended rebinds
- Repeated Tool → Mouse 4 (side button), C, or Left Alt. The single biggest quality-of-life fix. Hold it while moving to water, hoe or mine without click fatigue.
- Charged tool on the other mouse button / left trigger. Confirm it does not overlap Interact, or you will open chests mid-swing.
- Order the hotbar by routine: hoe → watering can → seeds → pickaxe → sword. On mine days move weapon and food to easy reaches.
- Dodge on a reachable shoulder/paddle. Once mine combat opens, a reachable dodge beats hunting through the tool wheel.
Known issues and tips
- Shift-click stack moving is a PC/mouse shortcut. On controller, chests use simplified menu transfer without the split-stack modifier, so packing exact request quantities is slower.
- Menu navigation on a gamepad can feel slower than mouse; the Deck trackpad works as an on-screen pointer if you prefer mouse-style selection.
- Re-check bindings after patches. New actions (magic, ranch tools, automation statues) get added to the tool wheel; revisit your scheme when you unlock them.
